Batlow

Opens external link in new windowBatlow is located 20mins from Tumut in the NSW Alpine region.   While only 20mins from Tumut the township of Batlow is ~ 500metres higher in altitude.  This rapid elevation has resulted in unique climate patterns that include average annual rainfall in excess of 1200 millimetres (50 inches) that in turn has produced unique flora and forna.

The town is about 1hrs drive to Wagga Wagga and 2hrs to Albury and about 40 mins drive from the Hume Highway.  The nearest airport is at Wagga Wagga.  The town is serviced directly by NSW Countrylink coach services.  Other close towns include Adelong and Tumbarumba both about 20 mins scenic drive.

Described as one of Australia’s most beautiful Alpine towns Batlow is nestled in an Alpine Valley with stunning views of dramatic mountain ranges with snow covered peaks during the winter months.  The enormous rainfall leads to abundant growth and gives a reminder of what Australia was like before climate change and drought became the norms.  Climate change has also affected this region but nowhere near to the extent as many other areas.  While it once snowed every year snow in the village these days is occurs every several years - 2008 was one of these years and hence these wonderful images.

The town comprises ~ 1400 people and a further 350 in the surrounding hills.  A small town it was once the home to gold mines and the Mountain Maid company producing processed fruit from the extensive surrounding orchards.   While all but the orchard industry has declined this legacy of manufacturing has endowed the town with significant capital infrastructure far above that of similar sized towns.

Today Batlow is known for its apples – with the abundant rain and cool climate producing some of Australia’s most beautiful fruit.  The industry s one of the major employer in the immediate area and contributes signifianctly to the local economy.

The other major local employer is Forestry – harvesting sustainable forests grown throughout the region.

Activities in the area include:  cycling, trail bikes, fishing, bush walking.
